Associate professor Aissam Hachid is the head of arboviruses and emerging viruses laboratory at Pasteur Institute of Algeria, where he is also the Director of the Biosafety laboratory level 3 of the virology department. At the same time, he has been serving as lecturer in medical microbiology at medicine & pharmacy faculty, university of Algiers since 2012.
He is a pharmacist with a postgraduate degree in medical microbiology and holds a PhD in medical sciences in the field of virology from university of Algiers. He has been thoroughly trained at Pasteur Institute of Paris in the areas of virology, molecular biology, biosafety and biosecurity.
He has experience working in different settings including laboratories services, public health and academia. His expertise encompasses viral zoonotic diseases including emerging and dangerous pathogens, infectious outbreak investigation, field laboratory deployment, and biological risk management involving high containment facilities. He has published in peer-reviewed journals as a researcher and authored many manuals, guidelines and technical materials supporting biosafety implementation in Algeria. He also serves as member at several expert boards at corporate and national level such as institutional biosafety committee of Pasteur Institute of Algeria, health ministry national committees for prevention and control of arboviruses and rabies and the intersectoral committee in charge of the implementation of International Health Regulation (IHR 2005) in Algeria for which he is the coordinator of biosafety & laboratory services working group. He previously served in EBOLA national advisory committee during West Africa outbreak in 2014-2016. During the COVID-19 pandemics, Dr Aissam Hachid actively participated in strengthening laboratory capacities throughout the country on detection, diagnostic technologies and risk mitigation.
