Dr Andrew Burke

Biography

Dr Andrew Burke graduated from the University of Queensland School of Medicine, Australia in 1997 and is a dual specialist in both infectious diseases and respirology at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane. Prior to his current role he has worked in rural Australia and in TB programs in South Sudan (Médecins Sans Frontières) and Papua New Guinea. 

His research interests focus on respiratory infection specifically the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of mycobacterial infections.  He is undertaking a PhD with the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research which includes leading the pharmacokinetic sub-study of levofloxacin in the VQUIN trial in Vietnam. His research interest in pharmacokinetics lead to the development of the mycobacterial therapeutic drug monitoring service with Pathology Queensland which supports clinicians throughout Australia and New Zealand. He holds a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (Liverpool) and a Master of Public Health (University of Queensland). 

Dr Burke is a principal investigator on multiple trials for pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease. He is on the Australian Therapeutic Guidelines writing groups for both antibiotics and respiratory disease. Dr Burke is a member of the Queensland Tuberculosis Expert Advisory Group and is current chair of the Australasian Clinical Tuberculosis network (ACTnet).
