Biography

Associate Professor and Chair, Dept. of Family Medicine, The Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan

Dr. Unab is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the Aga Khan University (AKU). She graduated from AKU-Medical College in 1993. Being interested in holistic care, she completed her residency in Family Medicine from Stony Brook, NY and a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine from the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, NY.

As a junior faculty at Montefiore Medical Center, she completed a Masters in Clinical Research through a T32 grant at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She was awarded a K-23 through NHLBI to focus her research on subclinical markers of atherosclerosis in obese adolescents. She has published original research articles in Atherosclerosis, Obesity, Metabolism and other international journals.

In 2015, she joined Brown University, Providence RI as Associate Professor in Pediatrics and the Executive Director of Health & Wellness. Her job involved policy and system changes to improve the health and wellbeing of Brown students through an integrated approach to medical and mental health. Since moving back to AKU in late 2017, she is building new collaborations to continue her research. She is presently a co-PI on an internal grant focusing on “Identification of epigenetic signature of high contribution susceptibility gene variant for diabetes and obesity”; and the PI on an “Employee Health and Wellness Programme”, examining the use of screening protocols to identify and improve cardiovascular and metabolic risk profiles of employees at Aga Khan University, Karachi.
