Consultant Community Physician, Director (Non Communicable Diseases), Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka
Dr Vindya Kumarapeli, is a specialist in Community Medicine with nearly twenty years of experience in public health and a Senior Medical Administrator, currently holding the post of Director Non-Communicable Diseases of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. She oversees the planning, implementation and monitoring of the national NCD prevention and control program of the Ministry of Health. She has held the posts of Director Policy Analysis and Development, Primary Care Services and Training at the Ministry of Health since 2010. Dr. Kumarapeli received her post-doctoral training at the Harvard school of Public Health, USA in 2008-2009. She was also a Research fellow of the Global Burden of Disease Group, School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne, during 2017-2018 working on a global project to improve the quality of cause of death data. She is currently a member of the WHO Reference Group on Health statistics. Dr Kumarapeli has contributed to the advancement of education and research in Sri Lanka in the medical field by being the academic supervisor of post graduate research in Community Medicine, Medical Administration and Sports and Exercise Medicine. Her outstanding contribution to science has been recognized nationally where she was the recipient of the President’s Award for scientific publication twice and the National Science and Technology Awards once. She has numerous scientific publications to her credit in peer reviewed Journals. Dr Kumarapeli is a Visiting Lecturer and an External Examiner at many post graduate courses at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo.
