Biography

Elaine Borghi works for the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, World Health Organization, Geneva, since 2002. Her main achievements include the development of the WHO Child Growth Standards and the WHO 2007 References for School-age Children and Adolescents, the UNICEF-WHO-WB Joint Malnutrition Estimates (JME). She has co-authored several methodological articles on child malnutrition estimates and on the monitoring of the global nutrition targets, SDG Target 2.2 and the 13th WHO Global Program of Work (GPW13). Dr Borghi currently coordinates and supports efforts on nutrition and food safety surveillance, liaising with other departments within WHO and with external partners.

She holds a PhD degree from the Statistics Department of the University of Wisconsin, USA (1997) and also has a master’s degree in Statistics from the State University of Campinas, Brazil (1992). Previously to her position at WHO, she was a lecturer at the State University of Campinas, Brazil, for 12 years. Besides teaching, it was her responsibility to provide statistical guidance to researchers in the agricultural engineering field.
