Jane Shallcross
Biography
Dr Jane Shallcross has worked in the fields of microbiology and laboratory biosafety for over 30 years and has specialist knowledge in the areas of outbreak preparedness and resilience, and personal protective equipment for use with biological agents. Dr. Shallcross currently works at United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and has focused on leading scientists through the biosafety of detecting high consequence zoonotic pathogens. She has experience of adapting the principles of biosafety to international settings with both high and low resources and has worked with scientists and country leaders in politically sensitive situations regarding laboratory capacity.
Dr
Shallcross is a specialist microbiology/biosafety trainer and has
developed a wide range of courses involving how to work safely with high
consequence pathogens. She has delivered trainings to scientists from
countries such as Jordan, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Pakistan and has led
workshops for WHO’s South-East Asia Region, Eastern Mediterranean Region
and African Region. She is also joint lead of the WHO Collaborating
Centre for Applied Biosafety and Training and was the lead contributor
for the WHO monograph on Outbreak preparedness and resilience as part of
the WHO laboratory biosafety manual version 4.
