Dr Nigel Rollins

Nigel joined the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing at WHO in July 2008. His work focuses primarily implementation research and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV through infant feeding. He is also involved with broader paediatric issues including health systems research and severe malnutrition.

Prior to joining WHO, Nigel was Professor and head of the Centre for Maternal and Child Health at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Durban, South Africa, where he lived and worked for 14 years. He was a member of the UKZN Ethics Committee for 7 years and remains a member of the board of trustees of Artists for Humanity, Durban, South Africa. Within the region, he has overseen evaluations of PMTCT programmes in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Malawi.

He was PI on a multicentre trial on ARVs and postnatal transmission of HIV as well as health system's improvement projects aimed at improving the quality of PMTCT services. He has authored/co-authored about 100 peer-reviewed publications and 15 book chapters and reports.
