Biography

Prof. Yiming Shao is the Chief Expert on AIDS for the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), Beijing China. He was the founder of the National AIDS Reference Laboratory and Director of the Division of Research in Virology and Immunology for the National Center for STD/AIDS Prevention. He led the national networks for HIV testing and diagnosis, molecular epidemiology and drug resistance surveillance programme and discovered the origin and spreads of HIV-1 clades as well as studying the drug resistance HIV strains and their impacts on the antiviral treatment in China.

His team developed the HIV vaccines based on DNA and replicating vaccinia vector and have concluded the phase I and II clinical trials. The vaccines have been found to stimulate good antibody and T cell responses and preparations for Phase III trial are presently underway. He has published over 900 research papers in English and Chinese journals. He has been awarded China’s National Science and Technology Awards and is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He also serves as the Chair Professor and director for the AIDS Research Center in Nankai University, Chair Professor of Zhejiang University, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Microbiology Society.
