Overview

Various stakeholders in the global health ecosystem have developed educational materials that significantly improve health workers’ access to continuous learning. However, addressing global health challenges and enhancing the health workforce’s capacity requires a joint effort.

The WHO Academy’s mission is to build a lifelong learning ecosystem that enables health and care workers, policymakers, and WHO staff to develop their capabilities. The Academy aims to establish partnerships that promote innovative lifelong learning practices in health. To achieve this, the WHO Academy will develop an ecosystem—a network of interconnected entities, organizations, and individuals that collaborate to support the Academy’s mission and objectives.

Globally, the Academy will promote cooperation with WHO Member States, academic and research institutions, international organizations, the UN system, and the private sector. It will leverage the immense potential represented by WHO Collaborating Centers, a network of over 800 research institutes and universities in more than 80 countries, to co-create courses.

The Academy will strengthen existing partnerships and explore new opportunities to form alliances, networks, and forums that support the development of training for the health workforce. It will also facilitate research in health worker education design and delivery by undertaking in-house research and working with research partners to bridge key knowledge gaps.

In addition to contributing to knowledge production, the WHO Academy campus will also serve as a platform for knowledge sharing by organizing, co-organizing and hosting training programmes, workshops, seminars, conferences, and exhibitions.

By encouraging collaboration, coordination, and knowledge sharing, the Academy aims to lead in establishing a global lifelong learning ecosystem in health.
