Addressing unsafe abortion through a health systems approach
WHO supports countries to apply a health systems strengthening approach, to reduce the burden of unsafe abortion, and maternal mortality and morbidity that result from unsafe abortion.
This work involves holistically strengthening all of the 6 core building blocks of the health system: service delivery; health workforce; information; medical products, vaccines and technologies; financing; and leadership/governance. Our work is aimed at integrating interventions that support the reduction of unsafe abortion, into this holistic approach.
Examples of activities under this work include:
- training on and organising policy dialogues;
- developing technical guidelines, and supporting alignment of national policies, regulations and strategic plans with guidelines;
- developing training tools and learning courses to strengthen pre-service and in-service capacity;
- developing indicators and guidance on measurement and monitoring;
- strengthening capacity to utilize data for decision making;
- supporting appropriate processes for in-country registration of essential commodities including mifepristone and misoprostol; and
- supporting the integration of SRH service benefits inclusive of abortion and family planning into health financing systems.
