Supporting country programmes

WHO is committed to improving access to quality and rights-based family planning services in every country, through national level strategies and programmes.

As a key partner to Ministries of Health in all Member States, WHO works with WHO Regional and Country Offices to develop policies and programmes which are informed by WHO’s evidence-based research and guidance.

The WHO Family Planning Accelerator project is active across 14 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, South East Asia and African Regions to improve national level family planning provision through:

  • strengthening country leadership with exchange of ideas, needs assessment and technical cooperation
  • setting up peer to peer learning, for countries to exchange experiences of implementing and scaling up family planning activities
  • providing technical support for context-specific needs, with a focus on advancing adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • building partnerships with professional organizations at the global, regional and country level to align strategic priorities and activities.

This work takes place within the broader framework of the WHO 13th General Programme of Work and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These include targets for universal health coverage that cannot be met without worldwide access to family planning, information and education including a range and choice of available contraceptive methods.
