World AIDS Day
01 December 2020
Look after your sexual health
World AIDS Day is marked every year on 01 December to remind us that we cannot become complacent about HIV. HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed tens of millions of lives across the globe. However, with increasing access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care, including for opportunistic infections, HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.
While significant progress has been made in the battle against HIV in China, there are still an estimated 960,000 people living with HIV in China, and over 400 new cases are diagnosed every day. Over 34,500 people died from HIV-related illness in 2019 in China.
According to data from the China Center for Disease Control, men aged 60 and over are the fastest growing population at risk of HIV infection – with a huge 500% increase in the number of men over 60 years old diagnosed with HIV from 2010 to 2019.
This year, the theme in China is ‘Look after your sexual health’ - where people are urged to know their HIV infection status through testing, and to encourage prevention interventions - including the use of condoms and pre-exposure prophylaxis.
