The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2017 was on “Smoke-free Next Generation.” The campaign was to increase awareness on:

  • There is nothing cool or fashionable about smoking
  • Young people can make the choice of living a healthy, smoke-free life.
  • Young people are the future leaders to push for the creation of healthy, smoke-free China

Key facts

25% of smokers started at the age of 10

Most smokers start using tobacco at a young age, almost a quarter of these individuals begins using tobacco before the age of 10, and then continue using it throughout adulthood. Eventually, a significant proportion will experience tobacco-related illnesses and death.

The younger children are when they first try smoking, the more likely they are to become regular tobacco users and the less likely they are to quit.

4 out of 5 teenagers

The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year spreading its marketing net to attract young customers, targeting youth with messages that smoking is cool and linked to a glamorous lifestyle. Four out of five teenagers living in developing countries say they have recently seen pro-tobacco advertising.
