RCC members

The Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliovirus Eradication (RCC) currently consists of the following members.

  • Professor David Salisbury, Chair
    Professor Salisbury is a paediatrician and currently Associate Fellow, Centre on Global Health Security, Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, London, and Chair of the Board of the Jenner Vaccine Foundation. He serves as Chair of both the RCC and the Global Commission for Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication.

  • Professor Donato Greco
    Dr Greco is a medical doctor specialized in communicable disease, hygiene and public health, epidemiology, and medical biostatistics, and is also a Senior Research Fellow.
  • Dr Heli Harvala
    Dr Harvala is a Consultant Medical Virologist for the United Kingdom’s National Health Service Blood and Transplant, and she also leads the Blood Safety research team within the Blood and Transplant Research Unit at the University of Oxford. She has established and continues to lead the European Non-Polio Enterovirus Network, which evaluates the importance of enterovirus and parechovirus infections, and monitors for their emergence, together with collaborators from over 20 European countries.
  • Dr Gülay Korukluoğlu
    Dr Korukluoğlu is a medical doctor with additional training in microbiology and virology. She is a Member of the University of Health Sciences and a microbiology laboratory expert in Ankara City Hospital, Ankara, Türkiye. As Director of Türkiye’s National Virology Laboratory from 2008 to 2022, she led the establishment of the WHO national reference laboratories in Türkiye for the elimination/eradication of vaccine-preventable childhood diseases, such as measles and polio.

  • Ellyn W. Ogden
    Ms Ogden has been the Worldwide Polio Eradication Coordinator and Technical Director for the United States of America’s Agency for International Development (USAID) since 1997.

  • Dr Rudolf Tangermann
    Dr Tangermann is a paediatrician and epidemiologist. For more than 20 years he has worked on polio eradication and immunization issues at the global level, with an emphasis on assisting with the implementation of polio eradication field strategies, such as supplementary immunization campaigns and disease surveillance, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and on maintaining and further improving poliovirus surveillance at the global level.
