Call for submissions

As WHO celebrates its 75th anniversary, the WHO European Healthy Cities Network is delighted to invite abstract submissions for its Annual Business and Technical Conference scheduled for 21–23 November 2023 in Utrecht, Kingdom of the Netherlands.

To mark the Network’s 35th anniversary and celebrate its growth into a renowned worldwide movement, the theme of the in-person 2023 Conference is “Health and well-being for all: celebrating 35 years of the Healthy Cities movement”.

The WHO European Healthy Cities Network was launched in 1988 as a political, cross-cutting and intersectoral initiative that directly collaborates with cities across the WHO European Region. Every year, the Network’s Conference serves as a platform to highlight its impact and excellence in the Region and beyond.

By bringing together researchers, practitioners and policy-makers, the Conference fosters discussion on important public health issues, perspectives, methods and findings. Through these exchanges, it contributes to ongoing conversations on creating healthier, more equitable cities.

For this year’s Conference, abstracts must be related to 1 of the 6 subthemes outlined below.

  • Prosperity and planet
    • Thriving together: navigating health in the well-being economy
    • One Health, one future: moving towards planetary well-being
  • People and participation
    • Leaving no one behind: advancing health in a digital era
    • Power of cities: delivering an inclusive mental health agenda
  • Place and peace
    • Urban futures: co-creating sustainable places for all generations
    • Learning from experience: fostering resilient cities in the face of emergencies

The deadline for abstract submission is 15 July 2023. After the peer-review process of the Scientific Committee of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network, applicants will be informed of whether their abstract has been accepted by September 2023.

This year’s Conference will attract politicians and key decision-makers from within cities, as well as technical experts. The Network aims to capitalize on the momentum generated by the 2022 Conference, which gathered people around the theme of One Health.
