On 15 February 2023, WHO/Europe’s Health in Prisons Programme (HIPP) and the WHO Collaborating Centre, Institute of Public Heath of University of Porto (ISPUP), will run a hybrid event in Lisbon, Portugal, to launch the Status report on prison health in the WHO European Region 2022. The event will be co-hosted by Portugal’s Ministry of Health and Ministry of Justice with special participation by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

This event will bring together members of the prison health community from across Member States, including health care professionals, prison administrators, academics, professional organizations, and experts in the field.

Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, will open the meeting. Sessions will feature a rich array of presentations on the report’s key findings and discuss how recommendations can be translated into meaningful improvement in prison health systems.

Major topics to be discussed are:

  • integrating prison health into public health
  • governance models of prison health in the WHO European Region
  • major issues in monitoring the health status of people living in prison in the Region.

This new report will enable countries to set targets for the performance of their prison health systems, monitor progress over time, and learn from the achievements of countries.

You can register for this event.

The Health in Prisons Programme (HIPP) is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and the United Kingdom Health Security Agency.
