A broad range of organizations and sectors were represented at the 3-day One Health Seminar for the European Region. Besides the 4 Quadripartite organizing partners (WHO, WOAH, FAO and UNEP), the participants included representatives from ministries of agriculture, veterinary public health, human public health, food safety, wildlife, environmental organizations and academia. It was truly a One Health event and the first to be organized by the Quadripartite.
The meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from Dr Ulrich Herzog representing the Government of Austria and video addresses from regional directors of the Quadripartite organizations. Discussions were lively and covered topics such as best practice in One Health, navigating policy, legislation, advocacy and finance, as well as transforming One Health from an approach to action.
The event brought together 120 participants – with a further 60 attending online – from 41 countries: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Uzbekistan.

This important regional event brings together representatives from the public health, animal health and environmental health sectors across Europe and Central Asia and is organized jointly by the regional offices for Europe of the Quadripartite partners, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), WHO, and World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), all of whom are members of the Regional One Health Coordination Mechanism in Europe with WOAH as Chair 2024–25.
Participants will discuss and identify opportunities and best practices for operationalizing the One Health approach to address health threats originating in the human-animal-environment interface in Europe and Central Asia, leveraging the One Health Joint Plan of Action and its Implementation Guide.
The event will provide a forum to discuss recommendations for the integration of the One Health concept into existing national plans and agree on recommendations to Member States for the One Health sessions at the upcoming 31st Regional Conference of the WOAH in Uzbekistan and at the 74th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in Copenhagen.
Under the umbrella of the Regional One Health Coordination Mechanism for Europe, a Partner Platform will take place bringing together regional institutions, donors, academia and others, to discuss future collaborative actions to support countries in Europe and Central Asia implementing the One Health concept.
