This first webinar in the WHO/Europe and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) alcohol and cancer series is designed to demystify the work of the IARC and equip policy-makers, early-career researchers, youth advocates, health professionals, representatives of nongovernmental organizations and other relevant stakeholders with the confidence to use and communicate its findings.
Through a plain-language, interview-based format, the session will explain what the IARC is, how its flagship Monographs and Handbooks programmes evaluate the evidence on the causes of cancer and ways to prevent it, respectively, and why its evaluations can be trusted, even in politically sensitive or contested areas.
Special focus will be placed on the evaluations from previous Monographs on alcohol as a cause of cancer, and on Handbook Volume 20A on alcohol reduction and cancer prevention. The session will present the evidence about reducing alcohol-related cancer risk, and introduce the alcohol policy interventions that matter most in reducing population levels of alcohol consumption.
This foundational session is essential for appreciating the evidence base behind the upcoming webinars focused on Volume 20B, which explores the effects of alcohol policy interventions on reducing alcohol consumption.
The webinar is part of the WHO–European Union (EU) Evidence into Action Alcohol Project (EVID-ACTION) funded by the European Commission. EVID-ACTION’s objective is to use scientific evidence to promote and facilitate the implementation of effective alcohol policies in the EU, Iceland, Norway and Ukraine.
