Health data governance in the age of AI

28 May 2025
14:00–15:00 CEST, online

WHO/Europe will host a webinar on 28 May to explore the nuances of health data governance in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). This is the fourteenth webinar in the Decoding Data and Digital Health series, which addresses digital health topics of importance to countries in the WHO European Region.

The need for strategic governance

The rapid development and use of AI tools in diagnostics, clinical decision-making and public health surveillance have increased the need for governance frameworks that protect individual rights while enabling innovation. Ensuring ethical use, minimizing algorithmic bias, safeguarding equity and maintaining public trust must be central to how health data are managed and regulated.

WHO/Europe’s recently published policy brief “Health data governance in the age of artificial intelligence: policy imperatives for the WHO European Region” highlights trends, challenges and key recommendations for using health data in AI responsibly. The brief calls on governments and health leaders to take proactive steps in establishing governance models that keep pace with technological change while upholding fundamental values of equity, privacy and trust.

Enhancing country capacities to better govern digital transformation in the health sector is a key priority of the Regional Digital Health Action Plan for the WHO European Region 2023–2030.

The webinar

The 1-hour event will invite international experts to discuss the complexities of health data governance in an AI-driven future. Participants will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session and learn about best practices, challenges and policy recommendations surrounding the use of health data for AI.

The event will be hosted in English and Russian. It is open to the public, including digital health developers, health and care workers, policy-makers, researchers, and representatives of advocacy groups. Please use the registration link if you are interested in taking part.

The Decoding Data and Digital Health webinar series is supported by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety) through the action “Supporting Member States in the WHO European Region in strengthening health information systems and boosting health data governance”.
