This second webinar in the WHO/Europe and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) alcohol and cancer series will focus on economic interventions that reduce alcohol affordability to curb alcohol-related harm. Taxation remains one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health tools to lower alcohol consumption, with growing evidence also supporting the role of minimum pricing as a complementary strategy. Despite this, both measures remain underutilized across the WHO European Region.
The session will present the latest findings on alcohol taxes, prices and affordability from the recent WHO technical report “Alcohol taxes, prices and affordability in the WHO European Region in 2022”, as well as practical insights from countries that have successfully implemented pricing policies. It will also introduce the “Alcohol taxation and pricing policies implementation toolkit”, which a practical guide designed to support policy-makers and stakeholders in developing, adopting and evaluating alcohol pricing measures.
The webinar is part of the WHO–European Union (EU) Evidence into Action Alcohol Project (EVID-ACTION) funded by the European Commission. EVID-ACTION’s objective is to use scientific evidence to promote and facilitate the implementation of effective alcohol policies in the EU, Iceland, Norway and Ukraine.
