Measuring the global diabetes targets in the WHO European Region: Italy case study

Overview
Five global diabetes targets have been developed to strengthen the prevention and control of diabetes. There are different approaches and data sources that can be used to measure progress against these targets within the WHO European Region. In Italy, multiple key sources for diabetes surveillance exist, including the Associazione Medici Diabetologi (AMD) [Italian association of medical diabetologists] Annals initiative and the Italian Health Examination Survey– CUORE Project (Ita-HES). The AMDAnnals initiative extracts data from existing electronic health records from a sample of outpatient diabetes clinics annually. TheIta-HES is carried out every 5 years.
