The WHO Global HIV Programme aims to provide up-to-date information on PrEP use and the adoption of the WHO recommendations on PrEP into national guidelines around the world. The data provided here were verified with countries where possible. If you have any further information on the data provided here, please contact the WHO PrEP team (hivprep@who.int) so that we can ensure our data are as accurate as possible.

Numbers of PrEP users

In 2023, more than 3.5 million people received PrEP at least once. Over 75% of these (2.6 million) were in the African region.

While the number of people who received PrEP increased by 35% between 2022 and 2023, these numbers are still below the target of 10 million people using PrEP by 2025.
