Technical Advisory Group on Food Safety: Safer Food for Better Health
The Technical Advisory Group (the ‘‘TAG’’) is an advisory body that will provide guidance and inputs to support WHO’s efforts and work in food safety. This group shall analyze the current and future challenges in agri-food supply chains as well as advise on innovative solutions and approaches with greatest public health benefits. Eventually, the aim is to strengthen national food safety systems and lower the burden of foodborne illnesses.

The Technical Advisory Group (the ‘‘TAG’’) is an advisory body that will provide guidance and inputs to support WHO’s efforts and work in food safety. This group shall analyze the current and future challenges in agri-food supply chains as well as advise on innovative solutions and approaches with greatest public health benefits. Eventually, the aim is to strengthen national food safety systems and lower the burden of foodborne illnesses.

The TAG was established in 2020, following the endorsement of the resolution WHA73.5. The TAG includes 24 renowned food safety experts ranging from six WHO regions. Normally the group meets twice a year with individual agendas covering different aspects of food safety systems, including but not limited to 1)  food controls; 2) emerging food safety risks; 3) food safety risk analysis; 4) stakeholders engagement and communication; 5) food safety and economics.

Specifically, the function of the TAG is to:

  • identify and describe current and future challenges along the agri-food supply chain;
  • advise WHO on strategic directions to be prioritized to improve national food safety system;
  • identify interventions and activities to improve food safety for WHO’s analysis;
  • advise WHO on the update of the Global Strategy for food safety and any other matters (implementation, monitoring, and evaluation) relating to the Strategy;
  • advise WHO on the establishment of a global task force on food safety impact measurement to measure progress towards the implementation of the global strategy and achieving Sustainable Development Goals; and
  • advise WHO on requests specified in any current and future food safety-related resolutions and/or decisions adopted by the WHO governing bodies.
