Strengthening Mental Health Services

2 March 2025
Note for Media

WHO plays a crucial role in strengthening mental health services in the Maldives. As part of the primary health care pilot project, selected mental health conditions were integrated into primary health care (PHC) services in Faafu Atoll, ensuring accessible and integrated care for individuals with mental health needs. This work was conducted with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through the Government of Japan. To enhance the quality and oversight of these services, WHO has developed and rigorously tested monitoring and supervision forms:  https://iris.who.int/handle/10665/380105

Furthermore, WHO is actively engaged in capacity building initiatives, equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide effective mental health care. Through advocacy efforts, WHO is working to raise awareness about mental health issues and address the stigma associated with mental illness. WHO is also actively supporting the strengthening of the national mental health policy landscape, by supporting development of different policies, plans and guidelines.

Recognizing the unique mental health challenges faced by adolescents, WHO is providing crucial support to the national psychosocial support helpline, enhancing its capacity to provide timely and effective assistance to young people in distress. Additionally, WHO has conducted a comprehensive assessment of Homes for People with Special Needs (HPSN), identifying critical areas for improvement in health and psychosocial support. Based on these findings, WHO is actively supporting the development of a comprehensive plan of action to strengthen health and psychosocial support services within these settings, ensuring that individuals in this facility receive the care and support they require.
