Indigenous peoples and tackling health inequities: WHO side event at the 21st session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

3 May 2022 17:00 – 18:30 CET

The health of Indigenous Peoples is often marked by higher rates of health risks, poorer health outcomes and greater unmet needs in terms of health and social services. Leadership by Indigenous communities is central for critiquing approaches to date and planning pathways to health equity for all.

This side event explores the ‘causes of the causes’ of these health inequities and considers measures to tackle them:

  • Action on social determinants of health equity
  • Strengthening equity-oriented health systems through intercultural care provision
  • Addressing the linkages between climate change and health

The event will inform the Indigenous health equity workstream of WHO Headquarters and the next WHO World Report on Social Determinants of Health Equity, the latter of which aims to outline an agenda for action through to 2030.

The event will run twice to encourage participation across time zones.
