Overview
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) present a significant global challenge, yet there remains limited political commitment, investment, innovation and research, and community mobilization for action. A coordinated advocacy platform for the global STI response is needed.
The World Health Summit, which will take place in Berlin from 15-17 October 2023, is set out to strengthen collaboration and open dialogue guided by science, to foster global health as a key political issue and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Taking this opportunity, the WHO Department of Global HIV, Hepatitis and STIs Programmes is organizing a post-conference meeting on 18 October 2023 to engage and discuss the challenges posed by STIs and potential solutions with multisectoral stakeholders, including civil society networks, private sector, academics, and representatives of ministries of health. It is proposed that this would be the first in a series of fora to be held periodically over the current strategic period to 2030.
Aims
This meeting aims to raise the visibility and the significance of STIs within global health discourse, foster new partnerships and interest, and mobilize action through advocacy efforts to accelerate the global response towards eliminating STIs as a public health problem and towards a better quality of life, including sexual life.
Particular focus will be given to solutions to raise political commitment, investment in priority research and innovation, and on increased advocacy.
Expected outcomes
A coordinated global roadmap involving multiple stakeholders is expected as an outcome. Stay tuned!
