Marking a milestone on the path to eliminating cervical cancer in Malaysia

17 November 2023
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

In Malaysia, the ROSE Foundation will celebrate a milestone in screening more than 25 000 women through Program ROSE (Removing Obstacles to cervical ScrEening) and ensuring that 90% of women with abnormal screening tests received appropriate follow-up.

On the day of action, the foundation will take yet another stride in their efforts to eliminate cervical cancer by implementing their first ever mobile colposcopy service in Tubau, a remote village in Sarawak. The initiative will mark the first-ever colposcopy performed by Program ROSE at a primary care level, bringing follow up care to underserved regions. Through the initiative 9 women, previously identified as positive for primary HPV screening during community outreach, will undergo colposcopy examinations and necessary treatments. This is made possible through the support of a local team of gynecologists and dedicated community champions.

The ROSE Foundation was established in 2019, evolving from an initial pilot project led by the University of Malaya to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of implementing HPV self-sampling in primary care settings. As part of its transition, the Foundation launched Program ROSE seeking to expand access for cervical screening and treatment among Malaysian women with a focus on the underserved and underprivileged population. The Program is currently implemented across 12 states and in over 200 community locations.

To reflect on their progress and lessons learned throughout the Program, the Foundation will be sharing community stories and successes with a commemorative video on social media channels. View Program ROSE’s commemorative video here.
