Institutions in the WHO Chemical Risk Assessment Network and other public health partners interested in the utility of problem formulation in risk assessment are invited to join this webinar at 15:00-16:00 (UTC+2/CEST).
Speaker: Kevin Elliott, Michigan State University, USA
Professor Kevin Elliott is a philosopher at Michigan State University who studies the role of values in science as well as a range of ethical issues related to science and technology.
The problem formulation stage of risk assessment can play an important role in developing fit-for-purpose assessments that meet the needs of decision makers and address the concerns of stakeholders. Nevertheless, previous guidance documents have devoted relatively limited attention to problem formulation in comparison with other stages of risk assessment. This presentation will discuss the opportunities that problem formulation provides to address the value-laden judgments that arise in risk assessment, and it will propose principles for managing these judgments responsibly. It will focus especially on the importance of surfacing these judgments, fostering transparency about them, and engaging in broadly based deliberation about how to manage them.
The webinar will include a discussion about the development of WHO guidance on the topic of problem formulation for chemical risk assessment.
