Americas: WHO delivers equipment and supplies to fight COVID-19 and save lives

17 November 2020

The WHO Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) has been delivering vital equipment and supplies to all countries in the region throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

In Nicaragua, during the aftermath of Hurricane Eta, WHO delivered  a large stock of equipment consisting of 7 510 surgical robes, 15 000 pairs of glove, 7,500 surgical masks, 5,280 units of soap, 450 non-surgical masks, 300 N95 masks, 150 pairs of protective goggles, 112 biosecurity bags, 100 mosquito nets, 22 laptops, 10 tablets, 2 videoconference cameras and 2 tents in order to protect health workers.

In Panama, WHO delivered 50 oxygen concentrators and other items required for COVID-19 case care. A significant number of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the country will need supportive oxygen therapy. Many of them belong to vulnerable populations: older adults from indigenous communities, from remote populations and areas with difficult access to health care.

In Paraguay, WHO also provided a batch of 24 oxygen concentrators to the Ministry of Health.

This new delivery of equipment is in addition to a series of donations made by WHO during the current emergency. Other initiatives have included training health staff, strengthening lab capacities developing protocols and more.

WHO thanks all donors and partners who have contributed to fund the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan to combat COVID-19. A special appreciation goes to Member States and other contributors who provided flexible funds, making it possible for WHO to deliver a coherent, strategic and broad response.
