Cameroon trains healthcare providers on the infection prevention and control and COVID-19

14 June 2020

The Cameroon government, together with the financial and technical support of WHO and United Nations partners, facilitated a training for Cameroon health personnel on care for COVID-19 patients and infection and prevention control in hospitals. The 4-day workshop educated 74 healthcare professionals from 10 regions. The training aimed to optimize the autonomous management of the pandemic in individual health districts for rapid and efficient care of the sick, reduction in the mortality rate linked to COVID-19 and the protection of healthcare workers. The trainings aimed as well to support the decentralization of the response which is a key approach for optimizing the outbreak management. To build on the training, participants will further train themselves other health personnel in their regions in various areas, including the early detection of COVID-19 cases, precautions to take when working with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 and techniques to identify and isolate positive cases. Cameroon is one of 54 African countries affected by COVID-19, and as of 7 June 2020 it reported 7860 confirmed cases of the 150, 610 confirmed cases in Africa.
