The WHO Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) and other UN agencies recently delivered more than 20 000 units of humanitarian aid destined to protect indigenous peoples during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Coordinated by PAHO, this shipment is meant to meet the needs of indigenous peoples to guarantee them the right to health and well-being. Special shipments help overcome the challenges of delivering aid due to distance and differences in language and culture.
Other agencies which contributed to the donation are the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator (OCR).
The donation included masks, gloves, personal hygiene and cleaning items, diapers, toilet paper, garbage bags, candles, matches, spotlights, mobile phones, school supplies, clothing and rubber boots to support the response to COVID-19.
WHO thanks all donors and partners who have contributed to fund the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan to combat COVID-19. A special appreciation goes to Member States and other contributors who provided flexible funds, making it possible for WHO to deliver a coherent, strategic and broad response.
