PAHO/WHO, with resources donated by the Canadian Government, delivered 4,000 safety glasses for the Napo and Orellana provinces of Ecuador to help reduce risks for health workers on the frontline of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The PAHO/WHO Representative highlighted the importance of protecting the life and health of the professionals involved in the response to the pandemic, and stressed the need to protect nurses, doctors, and other vulnerable health workers with appropriate PPE. The Ministry of Public Health also stressed the need to convince and educate the population to apply prevention measures such as physical distancing, hand hygiene and the use of masks. The Representative from Canada underscored the importance of supporting the work carried out by PAHO/WHO to fight the health emergency. The focus of the PAHO/WHO support is on surveillance and rapid response, risk communication and community participation, infection prevention and control, clinical management, logistics and maintenance of essential health services.
