Iran: WHO provides multiple shipments of critical COVID-19 supplies

20 June 2020

Since the start of the pandemic WHO has consistently supported the hard-hit Islamic Republic of Iran in its response to COVID-19 with multiple shipments of essential supplies. Most recently, on 20 June, WHO delivered a shipment of COVID-19 laboratory test kits to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The kits, which are based on PCR technology, are considered the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19. Two days before, WHO had also delivered laboratory supplies to the National Polio Laboratory. WHO also provides trainings for the National Polio Laboratory staff, and evaluates the performance and proficiency of the laboratory on an annual basis. Earlier on 16 June 2020, WHO delivered 2200 vials of remdesivir (a broad-spectrum antiviral medication) to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. The medication is to be used for the treatment of patients with severe COVID-19 within the framework of the Global Solidarity Trial, a multinational project launched by WHO to find an effective treatment for the disease. Islamic Republic of Iran has been an active participant in the trial since its initiation on 23 March 2020. Also, WHO delivered earlier in June 2020 two shipments of supplies, chiefly personal protective equipment (PPE), to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. PPE, including surgical masks, gowns, and gloves, were distributed to frontline healthcare facilities.
