Lebanon responds to pandemic with international support

4 June 2020

Lebanon successfully coordinated its first community-based quarantine related to a cluster of COVID-19 cases among migrant workers. Several international aid organizations (including WHO, UNICEF, and the United Nations Development Program) supported the operation following the International Health Regulations.

Lebanon is counseling people living with HIV on COVID-19 concerns through its National AIDS Programme. This at-risk population is being told to adhere to the specific Ministry of Public Health/WHO recommendations to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. The National AIDS Programme in Lebanon operates under WHO guidance for maintaining essential health services during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Fake news and misinformation must be quickly monitored in a country as small as Lebanon to avoid the spread of rumors. WHO, UNICEF and the United Nations Development Programme have collaborated with the Ministry of Information to create a platform that collects and posts fake news, misinformation and rumours circulating in the country under the title "Sa7e7 el Ma3loumeh" (check your facts).

COVID-19 has forced nations to reconsider their food safety control measures in accordance with international recommendations. Lebanon will use the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic as a window of opportunity to further strengthen food safety and hygiene measures to protect public health in general and the safety of workers in the food sectors.
