Peru: generous support from Canada and Japan to help the country response to the pandemic

17 June 2020

Peru is one of the beneficiaries of the US$ 2.7 million Japanese contribution to the response to COVID-19 in the WHO Region of the Americas. WHO/PAHO in Peru will use US$ 243,000 in activities aimed at slowing down the advance of COVID-19, strengthening infection prevention and control programmes in hospitals in Lima, Callao, Loreto, Piura, La Libertad and Lambayeque (1 per region). Risk communications activities will also be strengthened.

The PAHO/WHO Representative in Peru appreciates the solidarity demonstrated by the Government of Japan with this donation which came in response to PAHO's call to join efforts in the fight against the pandemic and save lives in the Americas. Japan's donation brought WHO/PAHO closer to the target figure of US$ 94.8 million needed to respond to the COVID-19 emergency in the Region.

Peru is also among the beneficiaries of support provided by the Canadian Government to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The US$ 193,000 contribution will be used for purchasing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and laboratory supplies to strengthen diagnostic capacity and infection control. Canada has a long history of international cooperation in the Region of the Americas with a special focus on vulnerable populations, such as indigenous peoples.

The Canadian Ambassador to Peru confirms Canada's commitment to assist Peru in the difficult times of pandemic, sharing his country’s vision that only through bilateral and multilateral cooperation in support of local efforts will the world succeed against COVID-19.

This contribution also comes in response to WHO/PAHO's call to donors to raise close to US$  95 million to address the pandemic in the WHO Region of the Americas. Response priorities include preventing and controlling infections, surveillance, ensuring the capacity of laboratories, case management and risk communications.
