Urgent COVID-19 support from WHO and partners for conflict-ridden Yemen

13 May 2020

WHO works with medical experts in Yemen to train healthcare workers on how to manage the virus without becoming infected themselves.

COVID-19 clinical case management training sessions were conducted in April for healthcare workers staffing the Al Talh isolation centre in Sa’ada, including doctors, nurses and medical assistants. The four-day training covered various types of cases that may present at hospitals, to prepare healthcare workers to treat or manage them.

WHO’s 267 staff and consultants (227 nationals and 40 internationals) in Yemen distributed across different offices in the country to strengthen the healthcare system’s response to COVID-19.

The World Bank announced a US$26.9 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA) — the Bank’s fund for the world’s poorest countries — to finance a new emergency project designed to strengthen Yemen’s fragile systems for public health preparedness, including the detection, containment, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, which the WHO will implement in coordination with local health authorities.
