#HeroesEndingPolio

Jenny, volunteer

We met Jenny during an immunization session in her barangay’s daycare center in the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio campaign. We thank Jenny and all the volunteers for helping to #EndPolio in communities.

“We go from house to house. We enter all the small alleyways, all the way to the end. We do these because we could not afford to miss even a single child. If that missed child will have polio, everyone in the barangay will be affected. So, we visit all houses, even those small ones which seem hidden from others.

We get tired, but that’s okay. Even if it’s a hot day, we still walk around. It’s also a challenge when the children spit out (the vaccine). There are always children like that who don’t want to cooperate and spit out the drops.

But I’m still happy to volunteer, very happy actually. I feel happy to be able to help out. I get to interact with the kids and I get to know about their lives. I interview them. It’s wonderful to hear them say thank you. That’s why I will volunteer as long as my body allows me to do so.

My message to parents is that they should have their children immunized. There are those who are fearful. I tell them that there's no overdose. It’s very safe, even with repeated doses. The children really need to receive the polio drops.”
