Regional stakeholder meeting on the response to antimalarial drug resistance in Africa: meeting report, Kampala, Uganda, 7–8 November 2023

Overview
The regional stakeholder meeting on antimalarial drug resistance in Africa brought together country representatives from the African and Eastern Mediterranean regions, researchers, partners and other stakeholders to align priorities and coordinate efforts. Discussions provided an update on artemisinin resistance in Eritrea, Rwanda, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, highlighting validated markers of partial resistance but also knowledge gaps, such as the geographical spread of mutations and the absence of markers for artemisinin-based combination therapies partner drugs like lumefantrine. Participants stressed the need for high-quality therapeutic efficacy studies and identified key priorities, including targeted national response strategies and a framework for improved coordination and data sharing.
