Key considerations for fast-tracking the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in lower-prevalence settings: lessons from validated countries

Overview

More than a decade after the launch of the global initiative for elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of HIV, only 16 countries have been validated as having achieved elimination of mother-to-child transmission also referred to as ‘vertical transmission’ of HIV.

Based on these country experiences, lessons learned and promising practices, this report describes strategic and operational enablers which countries can learn from to prioritize interventions in low prevalence contexts towards reaching elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
