Birth defects surveillance training: facilitator’s guide, second edition

Overview
This Birth Defect Surveillance facilitator (train-the-trainer) guide 2nd edition covers foundational skills needed to begin the development, implementation and ongoing improvement of a congenital anomaly surveillance programme, whether population-based or hospital-based, in particular for countries with limited resources.
The congenital anomalies used as examples throughout this course are typically severe, identifiable at birth, and of significant clinical and public health impact. For several, effective primary prevention strategies are available.
The course was developed and refined with input from trainers and trainees from more than 15 countries. Clinical case scenarios are added to integrate the discussion of ascertainment and diagnosis with that of primary prevention and data quality improvement.
