Status of tobacco production and trade in Africa

Overview

The lack of information on tobacco growing and tobacco trade has often been a concern for policy makers looking to advance tobacco control policies in the counties. This report will enable policy-makers and public health experts to develop a better understanding of the impact of trade liberalization on the domestic production and consumption of tobacco, but also of tobacco control measures such as WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) in the African continent.

The country factsheets on tobacco production and trade, jointly prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) include trends in current tobacco use, tobacco production, crop yield, and tobacco trade (including tariffs and non-tariff measures).

While the report covers only the countries in the African continent, the factsheets have been developed for all countries in the world.
