Paving the path for health  security and emergency preparedness by pairing national One Health road maps with multisectoral implementation tools and approaches

Overview

In the past few decades, the world has seen increasing emergence of large-scale zoonotic health events, including the emergence of novel coronavirus diseases, regular amplification of diseases associated with wild animals, such as Ebola virus disease and avian influenza, and ongoing management of endemic diseases such as rabies and tuberculosis. These challenges have resulted in renewed investment in multisectorality, or the “One Health” approach, for managing threats at the human–animal interface. The WHO Human and Animal Interface Team, with partners at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), has sought to align international policies, frameworks and tools to support governments in effective collaboration while complying with the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR). A step-wise method has been developed for national governments to use in assessing their requirements for collaboration between the human and animal health sectors and then selecting the necessary tools and approaches.
