Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Health Burden Estimation - WHO Expert Consultation Meeting
18-19 January 2018, Geneva, Switzerland

Overview
On 18-19 January 2018, WHO organised an expert consultation meeting on AMR health burden estimation to discuss a focused literature review of current research designs and challenges related to the adequate data collection and assessment of AMR burden and how WHO can and should initiate more comprehensive data collection to be able to develop BOD estimates for AMR. During the meeting, findings from a literature review on current research designs and challenges related to the adequate data collection and assessment of the clinical and health AMR burden were presented and discussed together with a number of expert presentations on related research by the members of the committee.
The analysis of strengths and weaknesses of collected evidence and the experts’ feedback will inform the development of a protocol for proof of concept epidemiological studies focused on estimating clinical burden of antibiotic resistant infections. This work is expected to generate an unprecedented set of reliable global estimates of AMR health impact collected in a harmonised manner across countries. In addition, the development of a standard methodology for estimating AMR burden that can be used and adapted to a range of different settings, will allow for effective monitoring and evaluation of both data collection approaches and metrics generated.+++
