First WHO meeting on optimal intake of animal-source foods: Risk-Benefit Assessment Expert Group - summary and conclusions

São Félix da Marinha, Portugal, 11–15 November 2024

Overview

The first World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Meeting on optimal intake of animal-source foods was convened to launch the work that will lead to recommendations on the optimal intake of animal-source foods and plant-based alternatives. WHO has brought together experts from all six WHO regions, and with a wide range of relevant expertise, to develop:

  • a WHO guideline on optimal intake of animal-source foods; and
  • a comprehensive implementation framework that will consider nutritional, biological and chemical risk and benefits associated with animal- and plant-source foods, while also taking sustainability into account.

Drawing from the group of experts, the guideline development will be carried out by the WHO Guideline Development Group (GDG) and development of the comprehensive implementation framework by the Risk–Benefit Assessment Group (RBAG). This document summarizes the conclusions and recommendations formulated by RBAG.
