Knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) surveys during cholera vaccination campaigns: Guidance for Oral Cholera Vaccine Stockpile Campaigns

Overview

Worldwide, an estimated 1.4 to 4.3 million cholera cases and 28,000 to 142,000 cholera deaths occur every year. In places where cholera occurs regularly, an estimated 1.4 billion people are at risk for disease each year. Slow progress in providing access to safe water and sanitation to underserved populations, limitations of surveillance systems for early detection of cholera outbreaks, and lack of access to timely and appropriate healthcare have contributed to this burden of disease. Recognizing the importance of cholera as a continuing public health problem, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted Resolution 64.15 in May 2011. This resolution calls for implementation of an integrated and comprehensive approach to cholera control, which may include the use of oral cholera vaccines (OCV).
