Intervention of Regional Director SEARO, Mental Health & Social Connection, 78th World Health Assembly, Geneva

26 May 2025

Hon’ble Chair, Excellencies, Director-General, Colleagues and friends,

We are facing a pervasive public health issue that impacts us regardless of age, region or background, and demands our collective action.

Social isolation and loneliness affect one in four older adults, and at least one in six adolescents.

Social isolation is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression and suicide, and is attributable to 5% of global dementia risk.

It increases the risk of various health conditions, including raising the risk of stroke by 32% and cardiovascular disease by 29%.

A lack of social connection also increases mortality rates by as much as 14% - 32%.

These are much more likely to impact individuals with physical and mental disabilities. The problem is exacerbated by the excessive use of technology by young people, and challenges in urban environments and infrastructure.

Older adults have a heightened risk due to life changes such as retirement, loss of loved ones, disability, or reduced mobility.

The impact of social disconnection is also felt in education, employment, and the economy. Society bears the costs of reduced productivity and job satisfaction, and lower rates of educational attendance.

In recent years, research has yielded promising strategies. These solutions range from national policies, social infrastructure enhancements, and targeted interventions such as social prescribing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychoeducation.

Until recently, social isolation and loneliness were largely overlooked as social determinants of health. We are heartened this is now changing.

WHO has initiated efforts to catalog evidence, but further support is needed to draw clear, actionable recommendations for policymakers and practitioners.

Hon’ble Chair and Excellencies,

We must prioritize social connection as a public health issue and address the root causes of this problem.

Doing so will create a more connected and compassionate society, the benefits of which will be felt by every single person we represent and serve.

I thank you.
