Repository of National Essential Medicines Lists (nEMLs)

The WHO Repository of National Essential Medicines Lists (nEMLs) serves as a comprehensive repository of national essential medicines lists, national formularies, and national standard treatment guidelines. These documents play an important role in guiding the procurement and supply of medicines in the public sector, informing reimbursement schemes, directing medicine donations, and shaping local medicine production.

The nEMLs in this repository have been gathered through extensive online searches of official government websites and databases, and thorough reviews of grey and academic literature.

Data contained in this repository can inform research on the composition and alignment with WHO guidance of medicines prioritized at country level. This research can support a more standardized, evidence-based approach to essential medicines selection, aiming to improve global healthcare equity and access to effective treatments.

WHO invites member states, regional and country offices to submit new and updated nEMLs, as and when they are published, via email to the EML Secretariat at emlsecretariat@who.int for inclusion in the repository.

All inquiries regarding the nEML repository should be directed to the EML Secretariat.
