Health Promotion
We work to enhance people’s wellbeing and reduce their health risks associated with tobacco use, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity, thereby contributing to better population health. We develop and implement cross-cutting normative, fiscal and legal measures and capacity development tools. We advance global health in health literacy, community engagement strategies and good governance for health, and foster public health action in the settings of every-day life.
Policy monitoring
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC)
is the pre-eminent global tobacco control instrument. It contains legally
binding obligations for its parties, setting the foundation for reducing both
demand for and supply of tobacco products and providing a comprehensive
direction for tobacco control policy at all levels.
To assist in country-level implementation of the WHO FCTC, WHO introduced the MPOWER package of technical measures and resources, each of which reflects one or more of the demand reduction provisions of the WHO FCTC. The results are reported in the biennial WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic.
