Today's complex world is characterized by environments that threaten our health, safety and well-being. Climate change, rapid urbanization, easy access to calorie-rich and nutrient-poor food and sweetened beverages, unsafe roads and workplaces, and a well-financed tobacco industry driving the global tobacco epidemic, all contribute to the high rates of heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, chronic respiratory ailments, cancer and other noncommunicable diseases, injuries and disabilities in the Western Pacific. 

In the Division of Healthy Environments and Populations, we envision a healthy start for every newborn and a long, productive life for every person. 

To promote health and prevent premature deaths, we support Member States in creating healthier environments with multisectoral action plans covering better food choices, tobacco-free policies, safer communities and workplaces, and inclusive health services.

We also recognize the crucial role of individuals and stakeholders from various sectors in mitigating the health impacts of negative behavioural, environmental and social influences—such as lack of physical activity, tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy diets. 

Through health promotion, advocacy for policy and legislation, and community education and empowerment, we help ensure that the places in which we live, work, learn and play are conducive to the attainment of the best health and quality of life possible for everyone. We also advocate for marginalized or vulnerable groups, such as women, children, adolescents, and people with disabilities or mental illness.
