The Healthy Islands story
‘Healthy Islands’ is an ideal envisioned in 1995 at the first Pacific Health Ministers Meeting on Yanuca Island, Fiji.
In 2015, the vision was reaffirmed and a fifth and final line was added. Accordingly, the Healthy Islands vision is one where:
Children are nurtured in body and mind;
Environments invite learning and leisure;
People work and age with dignity;
Ecological balance is a source of pride; and,
The ocean which sustains us is protected.
Over almost three decades that vision has formed the foundation for the Pacific Health Ministers Meetings that have followed every two years and served as a unifying theme for health protection and health promotion in the Pacific. The vision reflects the comprehensive and integrated approach to health that is a hallmark of the World Health Organization’s work with Member States and partners in the Western Pacific Region.
